| The first flashlight was used in the early 1890's in New York City. The word lamp is derived from the Greek word lampas, meaning torch. The light created by a glow stick is the result of a chemical reaction called Chemiluminescence. Sir Humphrey Davy of England invented the first electric carbon arc lamp in 1801.
