| Atomic clocks are accurate to one-billionth of a second. The earliest mechanical clocks, devoid of pendulums, were developed by Central European monks in the later years of the 13th century. Dials and hands in clocks appeared only in the 14th century. The first clock was invented by the Chinese, it ran on water and kept time for the emperor only. |
