| Astronomer Galileo first thought of adding a pendulum to a clock but it was Christian Huygens, who actually constructed such a clock. Dials and hands in clocks appeared only in the 14th century. Atomic clocks are accurate to one-billionth of a second. The earliest mechanical clocks, devoid of pendulums, were developed by Central European monks in the later years of the 13th century. |
